“Dynamische Bewegung ergibt nur vor stabilen Hintergrundbedingungen einen Sinn. Es kann erfolgreich und funktional sein, wenn die Spitzenmanager in einem globalen Rotationssystem Firmen und Länder wechseln. Wenn sich die Firma aber aufgelöst hat, wenn die Manager am neuen Arbeitsort ankommen, ist die dynamische Bewegung in einen Prozess des chaotischen Zerfalls übergegangen. Flexibilität und Mobilität sind nur funktional in einer im Wesentlichen stabilen Welt. Die totale Mobilmachung, die heute vielerorts gefordert wird, ist ein selbstzerstörerischer, dysfunktionaler Prozess. Menschen und ihre Gesellschaften sind erstaunlich wandlungs- und anpassungsfähig. Wir verkraften heute eine viel, viel höhere Mobilität, als frühere Gesellschaften sich auch nur hätten träumen lassen. Daher sollten wir vielleicht eher fragen: Wie viel Mobilität verkraftet diese Gesellschaft? Und da scheint es mir eine schwerwiegende Diskrepanz zwischen Demokratie und schrankenloser Mobilität zu geben: Demokratische Selbstregierung funktioniert nur, wenn die Beteiligten eine gewisse raum-zeitliche Stabilität aufweisen, so dass man den demokratischen Entscheidungsfindungsprozess auch organisieren und danach Verantwortung zuschreiben kann.”

“Today, organizations around the world are being compelled – by their employees, their customers, consumers, and their supply chain partners – to undertake green initiatives. But although they are caught in a deluge of information and opinions about the importance of being green, they find much less information and advice about the beginning, let alone maintaining, an effective green shift in operations. Sourcing lies at the nexus of a number of functions and business units, and is therefore in a position to influence action across an organization; it can be a strong leverage point for starting a green initiative. By working with senior leaders in other functions, sourcing executives enable a successful, holistic, multifunctional strategy for reducing environmental impact while cutting costs and building better relationships with suppliers and communities. They can do so by making gradual improvements and continually making the green initiative more relevant to the company’s overall strategy. Green sourcing is not a departure from the way sourcing is currently being practiced; it’s a augmentation. When considering the trade-offs between one material, service, or supplier and another, the sourcing function has traditionally measured the value of each by analyzing either the economics of the deal or the deal’s impact on the customer. Green sourcing starts with the same consideration, but it also takes into account the environmental impact of a particular choice, be it transportation, materials, energy source, or packaging design, on the ecological footprint made by a product or service.”

“Most management systems in use today date back to a manufacturing-dominated era in which firms were organized to execute as efficient as possible. For a long while and in may circumstances, management systems that were focused on execution-as-efficiency worked brilliantly, transforming unpredictable and expensive customized work into uniform, economical modes of mass production. Underlying the notion of a simple, controllable production system was the notion of the simple, controllable employee. With the rise of knowledge-based organizations in the information age, the old model no longer works, for a number of reasons. In such organizations, it’s difficult, if not impossible, to monitor employee productivity or measure individual performance in simple ways, such as hours worked. Performance is increasingly determined by factors that can’t be overseen: intelligent experimentation, ingenuity, interpersonal skills, resilience in the face of adversity, for instance. Therefore, a new definition of what successful execution looks like in the knowledge economy can be offered: the best organizations have figured out how to learn quickly while maintaining high quality standards. Organizations that adopt an execution-as-learning model don’t focus on getting things done more efficiently than competitors do. Instead, they focus on learning faster. The goal is to find out what works and what doesn’t; employees must absorb new knowledge while executing, often sacrifice short-term efficiency to gain insight into and respond to novel problems.”
